Halal way of slaughter is so wrong

The first 100 per cent Halal meat slaughterhouse in Europe is going to be situated just outside Banham (Diss Express, May 28).

English law demands that animals should be stunned before slaughter. Halal slaughter is carried out with a single cut to the throat without stunning.

The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), which advises the government on how to avoid cruelty to livestock, states the way Halal meat is produced causes severe suffering to animals.

As a nation of animal lovers should we allow this?

As for local farmers supplying such a venture, surely the vast majority of our caring and responsible farmers will not patronise an enterprise that treats animals in such a barbaric and inhumane way.

This is so wrong.

Great franchise opportunity?

If Mr Gilling’s dream of a new cinema, ice rink, theme park and McDonalds in Diss (Have Your Say, Diss Express, May 28), does materialise it would be an ideal opportunity for the franchise group to link up with NPD Services and the proposed new Halal abattoir and cutting plant near Banham and create the first 100 per cent Halal McDonalds drive-in cinema, leisure theme park complex in south Norfolk and build it on Fair Green.

Thanks for double aid

At Horham Community Centre on Saturday, May 29, we made £450 dancing to Blitz.

The money will be equally divided between Help Haiti and Help The Heroes.

Thank you to Karen Alderton, who organised the event, all who gave raffle prizes, and those who came along and had a really good time for two very good causes.

Margaret Streeter.

Chairman, Horham and Athelington Community Council,

Stradbroke
