With regard to the Wetherspoons application, while any grant of planning permission by South Norfolk Council would almost certainly result in the demise of more Diss pubs, the question of obtaining a new Premises Licence raises an interesting point.
It is a legal requirement to meet the four licensing objectives, one of which is public safety. With potentially 200-300 people spilling out late at night, and with the Mere just yards away, I wonder what steps Wetherspoons envisages taking to ensure a tragedy does not occur?
Another unfortunate consequence would be the loss of valuable public car parking in the town centre, at a time when the council is investing considerable sums to encourage visitors.
We already have a new, spacious public house, that, if the evidence of the rarely full car park is anything to go by, would indicate that we do not require any more hostelries in town.
