Worries continue over Norfolk rights of way paths ‘worst in Britain’

A ‘footpath champion’ in south Norfolk has said slammed the county council for inaction on maintaining public rights of way in his parish.

Work which should have been completed last year has been left untouched and will now have to add to work needed this year, claims Terence Blacker, a member of Dickleburgh and Rushall Parish Council.

But Norfolk County Council claims some work has been carried out.

Mr Blacker condemns Norfolk County Council’s public rights of way policy as “embarrasing” and “one of the worst in Britain”.

The county now urges individuals and parish councils to report overgrown paths. But no action has been taken on numerous reports from the Dickleburgh and Rushall area, Mr Blacker claims.

“It is just work on a computer not on the ground. It is going to be far worse this year because nothing was done last year,” he told the Diss Express.

But his comments come in the week when Norfolk County Council’s scrutiny committee reports that significant investments are being made towards the upkeep of the county’s most popular routes, some labelled as trails, where more than £800,000 of new funding could be attracted.

A spokesman for the County Council said work has been carried out around Dickleburgh “where appropriate”.

Council cabinet member responsible, Bill Borrett, added: “We’ve got a much bigger team looking after Norfolk’s paths than ever before, and it is a more efficient service.”
