A parish council chairman has slammed an act of “vindictive vandalism” perpetrated at night on a south Norfolk village’s football pitch.

The incident - which appears to have involved the use of one or more spades or other digging utensils - happened in Wortwell sometime between last Tuesday night and last Wednesday morning.

As a result of the crime, council chairman Malcolm Perry and Steve Reynolds, the Tunbeck Close playing field’s groundsman, had to dedicate several hours of their own time to get the pitch ready in time for a football game last Saturday - something the duo achieved.

Mr Perry said: “Our concern now is that this has been done once, so who’s to say it won’t happen again?

“We do not know the reasons for why it has been done this time, such as whether the person has something against the village or the club.

“But it is a nasty piece of vindictive vandalism, and in a place like Wortwell, which is normally so quiet and peaceful.”

The pitch had damage inflicted upon the centre circle, and both penalty spots and goalmouth areas.

There was also a dug line running the length of the pitch.

Known as The Playingfield, the facility plays host to neighbouring village Earsham FC’s home games.

On the repaired pitch on Saturday, the men’s adult side lost 3-1 to Scole United Reserves.

Norfolk Police is in the midst of investigating the incident.

If you have any information regarding what happened, call PC Andrew Baker at Diss Police Station on 101.
