Poor old Tommy the tortoise had to be rescued by the fire service after becoming stuck in a garden sundial today.

The owners found the tortoise with its leg jammed in cast iron work at the base of the sundial.

Running out of ideas on how to free it, they called the fire service to their home in East Harling.

Thetford station manager Derek Sim was on the scene within 20 minutes, armed with a pot of vaseline.

The call was made at 2.50pm, he arrived by 3.10pm, and the tortoise was free ten minutes later.

Mr Sim said: “In 20 years, I have never been to a tortoise rescue before.

“I went there with a fairly open mind. As it was, it was not too difficult to get his leg out.”

The sundial had to be tipped and the weight of the tortoise taken so he could be manoeuvred out. Mr Sim said Tommy was hissing throughout, suggesting he was not entirely happy with his predicament.

The owners were then advised to take him to the vet.

It is reported that the tortoise is not badly injured.
