Top class classic comedy

A bunch of crooks hiding in a crooked house as they plot a heist and a dotty old lady who somehow manages to thwart them at every turn - The Ladykillers is comedy heaven.

On stage at Norwich Theatre Royal this week, this stylish play is fabulous entertainment and very finely acted. Paying homage to the iconic 1955 Ealing comedy, which starred Alec Guinness, it boasts a stunning set which cleverly contains the complexity of action going on in different rooms. I loved the inspired way the car chase and robbery were handled.

But above all it is the stellar cast delivering classic comedy mayhem that shines out. Michele Dotrice, of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em fame, was wonderful as the sweet little old lady. Paul Brown takes on the Alec Guinness role as Professor Marcus, the mastermind behind the robbery, while his motley crew of crooks was played by Clive Mantle, William Troughton, Chris McCalphy and Cliff Parisi. A top class and delightfully British comedy.
