Owner of the Heywood Sports and Leisure Club in Diss, Tom Bobbins, has set himself a gruelling challenge to raise money for cancer charities.

The 33-year-old from Long Stratton has pledged to run four marathons in five weeks and then finish up with The Forces March in Devon which covers 135 miles in five days.

Mr Bobbins said the target he had set himself was “tough, but achievable”.

He aims to raise £8,000 for Cancer Research UK and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and said:“There’s been quite a few members of the club or their relatives who have had cancer, and a personal friend of mine died last year at the age of 38. So I wanted to raise a significant amount.”

Mr Bobbins completed four races five years ago when he ran the London, Chicago, Marrakech and Amsterdam marathons in the space of 18 months.

He said: “I vowed after every one I would never do it again. But then I think to myself that doing a marathon is nothing compared to what some people have to go through.”

He starts his challenge in Rome on March 23, followed by Paris on April 6, London on April 13 and Madrid on April 27. Then he plans to join The Forces March in Devon from May 21 to 25. The endurance race is based on a training march by soldiers during the Second World War from Ilfracome to their camp 135 miles away, and is now held annually to raise funds for The Veterans Charity.

As a sports club owner and squash coach, Mr Bobbins already has a good base fitness but is also training with one long run a week.

He can be sponsored online at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/thomasbobbins or in person at the club in Walcot Road.
