A card from the Queen congratulating John and Vera Harber on 60 years of marriage was not the only contact with royalty they have had over the years.
The couple, from Ash Drive in Eye, were invited to a Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, when Mr Harber served as Eye town mayor, and Mrs Harber as mayoress, back in the early 1970s.
They met at the pictures, at Palace Theatre in Lowestoft. Mrs Harber was from Blundeston and Mr Harber from Wrentham, villages both near the seaside town.
Mrs Harber said she remembers them simply getting on very well, which ultimately led to their marriage on April 3, 1954. It was at Blundeston church, with a reception in the village hall afterwards. Their honeymoon was in Great Yarmouth.
Mr Harber spend his working life at John Riches Engineering, and when the business opened a branch in Eye in 1961, they relocated to the town. Mrs Harber worked at Hartismere Hospital, and, more latterly, the Yaxley House care home.
They have three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren and celebrated 60 years with a family party.
