South Norfolk residents named top recyclers
South Norfolk residents have been praised for being the best recyclers after checks revealed the lowest rates of contamination with rubbish in any Norfolk district.
Twice a year random samples are taken from various council bin lorries carrying recycling into the Norfolk Waste Environmental Services plant at Costessey.
Of the randomly taken samples of recycling from South Norfolk Council bin lorries, only 5.85 per cent were contaminated with rubbish which should have gone to landfill - officially the lowest contamination rate of any council in Norfolk.
Councillor Keith Kiddie, south Norfolk cabinet member for environment and regulation, said: “We are delighted because the lower the contamination rate, the higher the income share we receive from the plant, which sells on all the recycling.
“That income is then ploughed back into improving our bin collection service.
“It also proves that working with residents and not against them is succeeding, our recycling rate is increasing and contamination rates are the lowest in the county.
“I would like to offer a big thank you to everyone involved and urge that one of our New Year resolutions must be to recycle more in 2013.”
Over Christmas and New Year, the council expected to collect 100 tonnes more recycling than in any normal two weeks.
South Norfolk residents recycle 42 per cent of what they throw away and in the last couple of years the council has also driven down the cost of collecting waste and recycling from around £43 to £27 per house per year.
