Rubbish dumped in lay-by ‘unsightly’ and ‘unhygienic’
Tasburgh, Norfolk. Tony Lacey of Mr T's Snack Bar on the Tasburgh Lay-by on the A140 which hasn't been cleared of rubbish by the council
A snack bar owner has said he is fed up with the amount of rubbish that is dumped on a regular basis in a lay-by in south Norfolk.
Tony Lacey, 52, has been running his business Mr T’s Snack Bar from the lay-by on the A140 at Tasburgh for almost two years, but in the last five months has become increasingly frustrated with the amount of rubbish that is dumped there.
Mr Lacey said until October last year, a team from South Norfolk Council would collect the rubbish, which often includes McDonald’s wrappers, pizza boxes and beer cans, from the lay-by every Monday. However since then, Mr Lacey said the rubbish has not been regularly collected, making the area “unsightly” and “unhygienic”.
He said: “South Norfolk Council is trying to promote the area as being a holiday destination, I get caravans, businessmen, and holidaymakers stopping at my snack bar and it doesn’t give a very good impression of the county. I’m inspected on a regular basis for health and hygiene and I’ve got a five star rating. I keep my snack bar clean but the council are not doing their bit to keep the area I’m trading in clean.”
A spokesman for South Norfolk Council said it has been reviewing litter picking across the district and is aware some areas have been visited too often and others not often enough. She said: “We are addressing this to give good coverage across the district and have several new initiatives running.
“We encourage businesses to make appropriate arrangements for their own waste and any litter they may generate and are able to discuss the options available.
“As with many authorities, we don’t put bins in lay-bys as a matter of course and encourage people to respect the local environment and take responsibility for their own rubbish.”
