An 18-year-old girl from Roydon celebrated a phenomenal weight loss after reaching the final of a nationwide slimming competition in Alfreton last month.

Ellie Moore made the final shortlist of 44 for Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year accolade, in recognition of her incredible 3st 3lb loss over the course of the past year.

Ellie said: “I used to feel like I was different from all my friends.

“I felt like I stood out because I was bigger and I couldn’t do the same things.

“It affected my confidence and I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. I wanted to make changes and I knew I needed help to do that.”

Ellie first attended the Slimming World sessions back in May 2013. The organisation states that it emphasises building self-esteem and confidence, as well as devising a programme of healthy eating and exercise.

She was voted by her fellow members to represent the Diss group at the finals, which were attended by double Olympic swimming gold medallist Dame Rebecca Adlington.

Speaking at the event, Dame Rebecca said: “Teenagers and young people get a bad reputation because we think of them all sitting in front of the TV or a computer but the young slimmers I met like Ellie have shown that their health is important to them.

“Given the right tools it is possible to make positive changes whatever your age.”

Although she ultimately did not win the competition, Ellie spoke of her delight at her accomplishment and praised her group for helping to alter her habits.

“It was much easier than I expected to start making healthy choices and I soon realised that I didn’t need to make drastic changes, just small things,” she added.

“The encouragement I got from the other members and my consultant really kept me going, even if I had a difficult week.”

Jane Aldous, the Diss Slimming World manager, said: “Everyone is so proud of Ellie. What she’s achieved is much more than just losing weight.

“The changes Ellie has made now have given her the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices that will stand her in good stead for the rest of her life. Most of all it’s given her the self-belief and confidence to achieve her dreams.”

Anybody interested can attend the Diss Slimming World meetings every Thursday at 10am or noon in the Diss Youth and Community Centre.
