NORWICH THEATRE ROYAL
Richard Alston brought his dynamic contemporary dance company to Norwich last week with a stunning programme designed to challenge emotions.
It’s all about the music with this company, and Alston’s choice of four eclectic pieces ranged from Benjamin Britten to Mozart to Bang on a Can All-Stars. Alston dedicated his first dance, Rejoice in the Lamb, to Britten’s rhythmic and emotional cantata.
Unfinished Business Duet was much lighter in it style set to Mozart’s beautiful K.533 Piano Sonata, danced by Elly Braund and James Muller with pianist Jason Ridgway live on stage.
The third piece was danced by three couples to Britten’s evocative Lachrymae Op. 48, before moving up tempo to piece number four, Madcap, danced to two compositions by Julia Wolfe for Bang on a Can All-Stars.
With minimalist staging, highly effective lighting and fluid costumes, the athleticism and sheer pace of the dancers set the pulse racing - beautiful and stunning modern dance. JUDY FOSTER
