Having served in the Diss fire service for many years I have now decided to look into the history of fire fighting in the Diss area.
Back in 2010 at the 70th anniversary of the London Blitz I noticed on TV that the fire engine leading the parade was in the markings of Diss Urban District Council. It was an Albion, purchased about 1949 which served the town up until the 1950s. I noticed too, that a photo was taken in 1947 of the Diss Firemen, in which out of the 14 firemen photographed, 11 were still in the service when I joined in 1967, and now all are dead.
Diss Museum seems to have little information so as well as going through the papers at the Forum in Norwich I would be very interested in old photos or information about fires, engines or firemen. If anyone can help with photos or information, I would be very grateful, and would of course return photos after photocopying.
Of particular interest would be information about the Niagara manual pump that lasted in Diss until the war.
