Plan to form Cittaslow committee progresses

Plans to form a volunteer-led Cittaslow committee in Diss are underway.

Jane Trippett-Jones, who has led a number of Cittaslow initiatives in the past, said a meeting will be held next month to allow interested residents the chance to form a committee.

The action comes after Diss town councillors voted at a special meeting of the full council last week to cancel their £1,500 a year subscription unless a new committee was able to show its dedication to keeping Cittaslow alive in Diss.

The decision came after many councillors questioned what Cittaslow does for the town and whether local people understand what it is.

If a committee is formed within three months, before May 1, councillors agreed they would pay the subscription for a further year to give volunteers time to find their feet, but after that year they would be responsible for their own funding.

Ms Trippett-Jones said she had been liaising with other members of the public, who like herself spoke at the meeting in favour of keeping Diss’ Cittaslow status.

She added that Cittaslow had been responsible for a number of initiatives in the town, including the Take Pride in Diss event, as well as providing at least £200,000 of funding.

If a Cittaslow committee is formed, Ms Trippett-Jones said one of her ideas would be to set up a community car scheme in the town, providing transport for people who don’t own a car or cannot afford to run one.

Full details of the meeting will be published when a date and venue is decided.
