The 12th Harleston and Waveney Festival has been hailed a “mega success” by festival chairman Robin Twigge.
Finishing with the popular family fun day on Bank Holiday Monday, the week-long festival featured an eclectic mix of arts and artists spanning international, national and local talent.
This year’s headline act was jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, regarded as one of the finest singers of her generation. She performed alongside The Charlie Wood Trio and The Dave Thomas Band at Archbishop Sancroft High School last Friday evening.
The festival kicked off on August 19 with an art and photography exhibition by the Wortwell Art Group in The Swan Hotel and continued throughout the week with theatrical performances from Harleston Players and The Keeper’s Daughther, a scrapbook workshop, Rotary dinner, Pulham Orchestra concert, archive film and exhibition, folk and country music sets, an evening of poetry and prose, The Big Sing 2013 and much more.
The event finished on a high with the fun day at Harleston Recreation Ground, which was blessed with glorious sunshine and attended by hundreds of people. The event included a flypast, dog show, classic car display, countless stalls and more.
Speaking at the fun day, Mr Twigge said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody, particularly those here today for supporting the festival over the last week. It has been a mega success and I really sincerely thank all the volunteers who have given up their own time to make sure it’s a success.”
After the event Mr Twigge said he thought a record number of people had attended the fun day. He said: “The whole thing was such a success. We haven’t had any complaints and everything was really well received.
“My only disappointment was that I wasn’t able to attend all of the events because there were just too many. But long may it grow.”
Mr Twigge said he was happy to continue as chairman for next year’s festival and would be keen to hear from anyone who would like to sign up to volunteer or offer their ideas. Anyone interested should call Mr Twigge at The Swan Hotel on 01379 852221.
