Norfolk County Council works to refill grit bins ahead of more snow

Norfolk County Council has today launched an all-out effort to refill depleted grit bins as forecasters warn of more snow.

Over recent days, the bins have been put to good use by motorists struggling at local trouble spots, many of which are not on the priority one and two gritting routes.

With temperatures staying very low and snow expected tomorrow afternoon lasting into Saturday, Norfolk County Council is targeting all remaining highway resources to refill grit bins.

The Council’s strategic partner May Gurney has diverted some of its crews from other road works, and in the west of the county the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk has offered assistance.

The refilling of the bins is in addition to the road gritting effort, which has continued without break since Sunday.

Graham Plant, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: “We have launched an all-out effort to restock bins ahead of the forecast snow. It looks as though we are in for a prolonged period of snowfall, and although it is unlikely to be anything like as intense as Tuesday’s lunchtime snowstorm, there could be more breeze, with a risk of drifting.

“Many parish and town councils have paid for grit bins, and these were filled at the start of the winter by the county council. These have been very well used over recent days, so we are doing everything we can to refill them. We are grateful for the support of our partner, May Gurney, and the Borough Council in west Norfolk.

“It is important that grit from these bins is only used on the highway. It must not be taken for use on private paths and driveways.”
