Pulham St Mary, Norfolk. The Pennoyers Centre in Pulham St Mary
A south Norfolk community centre is set to become the first business to take on an apprentice as part of a new programme which aims to get more young people into the world of work.
The Pennoyer Centre in Pulham St Mary has signed up to become a part of Saffron Housing Trust’s apprenticeship programme, which will work with Broadland Council Training Services, Diss High School and social entrepreneur Robert Ashton, to train school leavers and take the risks away for employers.
Sheila King, chairman of the centre’s trustees, said: “We’re a social enterprise and still quite young so taking on an additional staff member is a big step. Because Saffron will help us recruit the right young person and offer support, we feel this is a great opportunity for us.”
The apprentice will work in the cafe for four days a week and will spend one day studying with Broadland Training.
Mrs King added: “Our hope is that by recruiting the right apprentice, made possible by Saffron, we can grow turnover and create a full time job when the apprentice qualifies.”
Saffron Housing Trust has invested £90,000 in the project and has pledged to recruit and employ 20 apprentices and send them out to local businesses, while providing full HR support and training. To find out more call Mr Ashton on 01953 605000 or Stuart Tinker at Saffron on 01508 532006.
