One of the casualties of the spending cuts imposed upon Suffolk County Council was the Suffolk Youth Service, while funding for Norfolk youth clubs was also cut.
But now a new group, The Base, has been created in Debenham to help young people.
Communities were told that to continue to enjoy such provision they must make their own arrangements. With an initial financial package from the council, together with the use of the existing youth club premises, the Forge Community Church, already active in Debenham, put together a volunteer-based proposal that was acceptable to the community and ‘The Base’ was founded.”
Debenham had suffered another blow when their Skatepark had equipment found worn beyond repair and with no money available for replacement, was closed down.
A community initiative, ‘Project D’, was created to provide a replacement facility.
Youth club members in Debenham raised money to fund their activities and there remained in that account some £2,121, with well over 100 young people in attendance at ‘The Base’. The former chairman of the Debenham Youth Club Support Group, Eddy Alcock, was delighted to present a cheque to members to be used for their benefit by Becky Green and her volunteer colleagues, to the value of £1,414.
Another group of young people was pleased to accept a cheque for £707, to be used to aid the funding of their new Debenham Skatepark when its location could be finalised.
