More than 200 vehicles stopped and arrests made in multi-agency action day in Suffolk

More than 200 vehicles were stopped in a multi-agency day of action held on Wednesday, targeting criminals using Suffolk’s roads.

The operation, led by Suffolk Constabulary’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition teams, focused on roads bordering the west of the county, and aimed to disrupt criminals using the roads to commit crimes such as burglary.

Officers were joined by colleagues from police forces across the eastern region, and by partners, the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA), HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), and the UK Borders Agency.

Vehicles were stopped by officers in response to suspected crimes in action, through intelligence identified via the ANPR system, or after being identified as a vehicle of interest.

Seventy fixed penalty notices were issued, seven vehicles were seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act for having no insurance, 17 drivers were reported for summons for driving vehicles found to be in a dangerous condition or for offences relating to documentation, six people were searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and a vehicle was seized by HMRC, with the driver fined for unpaid tax on goods.

More than 50 prohibitions or advisory notices were issued by VOSA for vehicles with defects.

A 20-year-old man from Great Yarmouth received a police warning for possession of cannabis.

An 18-year-old man from Hornchurch was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent and received a police caution.

Anyone with information in relation to any criminal activity is asked to report it to police immediately on 101 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
