Memory Lane is returning this week to the stash of photos of the Burston area in the possession of Helen Grant of Sydney, Australia.

Some readers may have seen these scenes before, but they form just a few of many of pictures held on the other side of the world.

She came by the photos because her grandmother, Sarah Waling Carter, was born on Crown Farm in Mill Road (Burston).

Mrs Grant said: “Her (William Carter) father built the place. As much as I know, they bred work horses and raised cattle. My grandmother fell in love with an Australian and went to live in Australia in 1903.

“Her family sent her letters and photos of home. She also kept a journal of her journey here.” Those photos went to Mrs Grant’s mother Myra Grace, before coming to her. Her grandmother also kept a journal of life in Australia -quite a contrast to her previous years in south Norfolk.

Mrs Grant would love to hear any memories of the old days of Burston. Her grandmother’s sisters were called Eadie and Bertha.

Send them to Memory Lane, Diss Express, Norfolk and Suffolk House, Mere Street, Diss, Norfolk, IP22 4AE or email editorial@dissexpress.co.uk
