A Mellis mum who walked more than 100 miles for charity has been overwhelmed by the public’s generosity after doubling her fundraising target.

Sara Smith was hoping to raise around £2,000 for Leukaamia and Lymphoma Research - enough to fund a researcher for two days - but so far more than £4,000 has been raised. Her son, Will, now 20, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2007, but has been in the all clear from the disease for five years. Mrs Smith, joined by friend Judith Battersby, walked along the Peddars Way Walk and Norfolk Coaster Path over five days, arriving at their final destination, Cromer, at 3pm on Monday.

“The second lady we saw stopped us and said her nephew had undergone a bone marrow transplant,” she said.

“She said ‘thank you for what you are doing’. It just meant so much that we were touching other people.”
