Latest burglary at leisure centre linked to ram-raid last year

For just a few hundreds of pounds, a gang which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a leisure centre in a break-in last October are believed to have targeted the same facility once again.

Suffolk Police is linking a ram-raid that caused £21,000 worth of damage at Debenham Leisure Centre to a break-in at the same venue which happened last week.

This time, just £600 - raised from a recent fundraiser - was stolen from the centre’s safe, but the overall cost to the venue due to repairs that are needed for damage that was sustained during the break-in on March 11 will make the bill more like £3,000.

The venue, run by the Debenham Village Hall and Playing Field Trust charity, relies on grants and customer sales.

Debenham Roundabout Pre-School held a fundraising disco - attended by about 300 people - at the venue on March 8, three days before the burglary happened in the early hours of the morning.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said this latest crime took place between 3.30am and 4am. It is reviewing CCTV images from the night. The spokesman added that the offenders, between three to four in number, wore dark clothes. They loaded a van with the safe before fleeing. Anyone with information should call 101.
