Hundreds of planes, classic vehicles and famous autogyros will be descending on Old Buckenham Airfield on Sunday for an event to mark the life of Wing Commander Ken Wallis MBE, which has been organised at the request of his family, following his death earlier this month at the age of 97.
A classic vehicle display is planned and the response has been extraordinary. It is anticipated that at least 200 classic vehicles will attend.
The event has broken all previous records for pre-booked arrival slots by air. There will be a mix of aircraft from all eras. Perhaps most appropriately there will be a large number of autogyros.
Wng Cmdr Wallis, a wartime bomber pilot, was arguably the greatest exponent of the autogyro and an extraordinary number and mix of machines will make up a very special and unique display.
There is of course one aircraft that Wng Cmdr Wallis built that can only be described as extraordinary, unique and world famous; Little Nellie, the undisputed star of You only Live Twice and James Bond’s memorable aircraft. Little Nellie will be on display in the Blister Hangar throughout the day. In addition to the exhibits, various charities of which Wng Cmdr Wallis was patron will have displays .
Visitors will be invited to fill out tribute cards that will form a permanent record and exhibit, to be displayed in the future.
Matt Wilkins, airfield manager and organiser said: “We have received a stream of messages from all over the globe.
All have included wonderful memories and reminiscences of Wng Cmdr Wallis and all attest to the simple fact that he was a gentleman, national treasure and hero.”
