Ending my flood woe is not ‘rocket science’

A Diss man wants the town’s high school and Norfolk County Council to fix a blocked drain that causes his garden to flood when it rains.

Arthur Brown, whose house in Walcot Road backs on to Diss High School, claims he has been in contact with headteacher Dr Jan Hunt and the council’s highways department for several months, but no action has been taken to clear out the blocked culvert, which is on the school’s land.

Dr Hunt said she hopes to have the problem remedied over the Easter holidays.

Mr Brown, whose wife Sue is a keen gardener, is now preparing to put gravel over the damaged lawn in front of his house, which also contains a gas meter that gets submerged when the garden floods.

He said: “We’re fed up. Our lawn is ruined, and our sideway also floods when it rains.

“Solving the issue surely isn’t rocket science?”

The Browns moved into the house 20 months ago, and experienced no problems with the adjacent culvert initially.

Dr Hunt said: “Several stretches of Walcot Road have had large amounts of surface water. This has been the result of more than one blocked culvert. The school has deployed site staff to clear the culvert on the school site, and alerted the council about other causes of flooding.” She added that “complex machinery” is needed to clear the culvert, and that she has invited Mr Brown to
discuss this further. A council spokesman said it is working with the school on the issue.
