A lot of teenagers dream of becoming rock stars - be it air guitaring in their bedrooms, or playing the so-called ‘toilet circuit’ on gruelling gig tours across the British Isles.
But one enterprising north Suffolk teenager is looking to break into the industry through another entry point.
Jack Miles, 19, has just received planning permission from Mid Suffolk District Council to convert an old cow shed on land owned by his family in his home village of Rickinghall into a recording studio for musicians’ use.
The former Hartismere School pupil (Eye), said: “I was discussing my future with my grandad, and the idea of setting up a recording studio as a commercial venture came up.
“He said if I wanted to do that, he had an old barn I could use. So I set out researching, visiting recording studios, and the plan has since developed.”
Mr Miles, 19, who studied A-Level music, has recorded songs as a performer before, and has also recorded friends making music - something he “really, really enjoyed.”
He said: “I want the studio to be quite community-orientated, as there is so much music and talent in this area. This studio will hopefully be just one more way of getting everybody together.”
Mr Miles said he will look to get his studio - which will be suited to bands looking to record demos at a fair price to send to record labels - established first, but does hope to expand Brown Cow Studio’s operations as time goes on.
And that, the DIY-spirited teenager said, could involve tempting bands to the venue on Snape Farm, in Bury Road, from other parts of the UK.
Mr Miles does not expect the studio to open until next summer. Until then, he will continue working full-time at a local shop to cover the costs.
A fan of a “little bit of everything” when it comes to his own musical tastes, Mr Miles said that he believes the area has such a “big circle of bands”, it can accommodate the introduction of two new recording studios - his own, and The Bank’s recently-unveiled music-making facilities in Eye.
