Dames to do battle in aid of Red Nose Day
Preparations are already under way in the Diss Express area for Red Nose Day this coming Friday, March 15.
In Eye, work on a Comic Relief variety play involving a ‘Battle of the Dames’ is in its final stages, while a Body Shop Pamper Party on behalf of the Friends Of Roydon Primary School to raise money for the school and Comic Relief will be held on Thursday.
The money raised on Red Nose Day across the UK is spent by Comic Relief to help people living in impoverished conditions across Africa, as well as here in the UK.
Ahead of Eye’m Having a Laugh, which takes place the day after Red Nose Day so people can enjoy the BBC TV coverage on the night, Dove Players’ event organiser Simon Hooton, said: “The acts are coming together, and it should be a really fun evening that I hope raises piles of cash for a great cause.
“It will be a mix of radio plays, music, and even a bit of dance, with the ‘Battle of the Dames’ being a first.”
The latter event will bring together four local pantomime dames willing to entertain the audience.
Peter Cox, the Dame of Hopton, joins Roy Preston, from Puzzle House Pantomimes, and Alan Huckle who has performed in myriad local plays and pantomime, in doing battle with Eye Dame Mr Hooton, representing Dove Players. They will be up against local Eye ‘Dame’ Simon Hooton.
He said: “Having seen the talent we have in folk playing dames in local pantos, I thought it would be great to get them together.”
The event is being staged at the town’s community centre, and starts at 7.30pm.
At least £4 of the £5 entry fee will go to Comic Relief.
The bar will be open on the night, and other fund raising ideas are being thought of. Tickets are on sale from Mary Mills (01379 870455), as well as from various shops in Eye.
The Roydon event, which starts at 7.30pm at the village’s primary school, costs £2 to take part in - a sum split between the charity and the school. The ticket price includes light refreshments.
Tickets can be bought from the school office, Card ‘n’ Wrap in Mere Street, Diss, or by calling 01379 643002.
