Crash victim issues plea to make A140 in Brome safer

A man who ‘wanted to die’ following a crash on a notorious stretch of the A140 has called for safety improvements before more lives are lost.

Peter Barter, 72, was thrown from his car after a crash near the B1077 junction - known locally as the Devil’s Handbasin - in Brome. He suffered a series of excruciating injuries.

The Eye resident now wants Suffolk County Council to take action to avoid similar incidents at the turning; near to which Harleston resident Jessica Winterborn, 24, died after a crash in November.

Mr Barter said: “It is a notorious area and the sooner it is sorted the better. I can speak from bitter experience as to what can happen if it is not.”

The former dentist, who was born in Eye and has lived there on and off since, believes building a new roundabout could make the turning safer.

A spokesman for the council said: “We are not aware of proposals to change the junction, but we will continue to monitor the state of the road.”

Mr Barter added: “I don’t remember the crash, but I think I left my car from the passenger side. I recall waking on the verge, and feeling like I did not really want to live.”

Mr Barter suffered six broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken shoulder, a torn liver, kidney trauma and a broken nose from the collision. It involved his blue Suzuki and a black Audi, and happened at just after 2pm on January 9.

Mr Barter spent 12 days at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, but called the treatment he received there “exemplary”.

Suffolk Police is investigating. Call 101 with information.
