Council pledges to back firms

South Norfolk Council continues to do all it can to support small and medium-sized businesses in Diss and the surrounding area.

That was the message given by the council’s head of finance Debbie Lorimer when she was guest speaker at the annual meeting of Diss Business Forum.

She fielded many questions from the audience with many concerned that the council should do all it could so that local companies could tender to win contracts from the council.

She said the authority spent £6.6m on supplies and services for both revenue and capital items in 2011/12.

Of the total number of suppliers it worked with in that financial year, 28 per cent (worth £1.5 million) were suppliers with a postcode in the district and if this area was widened to include all Norfolk and Suffolk postcodes that rose to 49 per cent of suppliers (£2.5 million).

For the current financial year (it has spent the equivalent of £5 million to date) this has increased to 30 per cent (£1.5 million) the number of suppliers it has worked with who have a postcode in the district and if this area was widened to include all Norfolk and Suffolk postcodes this equates to 50 per cent of the total number of suppliers (£2.32 million).

In all, 90 per cent of its transactions with individual suppliers are under £20,000 per annum. However the council could not discriminate in favour of local firms.
