Comedian and boating enthusiast Griff Rhys Jones will be in south Norfolk in mid-October to grace the Diss Corn Hall stage and to officially open the new River Waveney Trust Study Centre.

The Welsh television personality and actor, who found fame in the early 1980s in BBC comedy sketch shows and more recently in the BBC’s Three Men in a Boat series, is a keen countryside supporter. He first fell in love with the rivers of Suffolk and Norfolk when he explored them as a child in a wooden sailing boat with his father, and he now has a home in Suffolk.

On October 19, he will officially open the new River Waveney Study Centre at Earsham, near Bungay, and in the evening will present ‘Griff Rhys Jones Afloat - One Man in Three Boats’ at the Corn Hall, with proceeds being shared between the Corn Hall and River Waveney Trusts.

Angela Sykes, Corn Hall manager, said tickets had been selling well: “Griff’s love of rivers and the countryside around it is well-known and we are delighted he will be with us at the Corn Hall.”

The River Waveney Trust started life in March 2012 as the River Waveney Association, becoming a charitable trust in November last year. It now has 500 members and aims to care for the Waveney, its ecology and its environment with an emphasis on education and local communities. The new Study Centre, on the site of the former Otter Trust, will be used as a education hub for local schools, courses on habitat and environmental topics, and general interest courses for members and local residents. The official opening ceremony will be attended by trust members and invited guests.

‘Griff Rhys Jones Afloat - One Man in Three Boats’ will feature Griff talking about his own explorations of estuaries, rivers, seas and canals. For tickets call the box office on 01379 652241.
