Maurice Philpot is calling time on his role as event organiser at St George’s Church, Shimpling, after forty-two years in the job.

The seventy-two year old has been involved with the church since 1972 and will be stepping down after December’s annual Service of Carols by Candlelight, the highlight event of the year.

“It is time for fresh ideas,” he said. “I don’t live in the parish and that makes it difficult to commute and to keep organising events.”

He has had a number of roles at the now Grade-I listed Church, which ceased to operate in 1987 when the parish merged with Dickleburgh.

“I used to be Church Warden until that role was declared redundant when the church closed down. Then the role completely changed. I now maintain the church for the benefit of not only the community but the nation. It now has historical and architectural importance.”

Despite retiring from this role, he will continue to work with the church.
