Pupils at a south Norfolk primary school celebrated Mardi Gras with a day of activities for the first time on Tuesday.

Pupils at Forncett St Peter Primary School had been taking part in Samba and headdress making workshops in the lead up to the day, and many pupils dressed up and wore traditional masks to get into the spirit of things.

Mardi Gras, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the celebration prior to the fasting season of Lent.

Pupils started the day with a visit from Jon Cann, a Samba artist from Norwich, who led a procession around the playground where pupils danced and played instruments.

Pupils then recited a Samba hymn, renamed Carnival Samba by headteacher Judith Jones, who changed the words to include Lent, pancake day, fasting and carnivals.

At lunch time, pupils were joined by about 50 parents and guests for a special lunch, followed by cookery demonstrations in the afternoon from the Kitchen Fairy Godmother.

The younger pupils learned how to make king cake while the older pupils learned how to make chicken gumbo.

Liz Chubbock, a teacher at the school, said: “They had a very lively and exciting day with lots of music, rhythms and lovely food.”

The workshops and demonstrations were paid for using funding from the Norfolk and Norwich Community Arts (NORCA), something Mrs Chubbock said they would not normally been able to afford as a small school.

And as a special treat for pupils to round off the day, school secretary Rachael Burrows and teaching assistant Gill Worrell made 94 pancakes, one for each pupil.
