The Diss Express can reveal the Co-op store in Diss will close in March, with discount grocer Aldi taking over the Mere Street premises.

It will close on Saturday, March 22, while the Co-op have said they will attempt to redeploy or find other work for the 37 staff currently employed.

A spokesperson for the Co-op told the Diss Express: “We can confirm that we have finalised the sale of our Mere Street store in Diss to Aldi, and that the store will close on Saturday, 22 March.

“Staff were informed last week, on Wednesday, 12 February, and every effort is being made to redeploy as many as possible of the 37 store colleagues, either with The Co-operative or to help them find alternative employment.

“We would like to thank the store team for their hard work, and our shoppers for their valued custom over the years.”

Aldi are yet to confirm the news.

The Diss Express revealed last month that negotiations between Co-op and Aldi were ongoing about taking over the store.

Aldi, winners of Which? Best Supermarket 2013, opened its 500th store in nearby Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, in October.

Should the discount retailer move into Mere Street, it would face competition from the nearby Tesco and Morrisons superstores in Victoria Road.

It is not the first time the store has been taken over.

The now defunct supermaket chain Somerfield used to operate the store.

Somerfield was taken over by the Co-operative Group in 2009, in a £1.6 billion deal, making it, at the time, the UK’s fifth largest grocery retailer.
