Brave woman rescues boy, 7, from the Mere

editorial image

A mother wants to trace and thank a woman who bravely plucked her son from the freezing waters of Diss Mere on Saturday.

Seven-year-old Noah Penton was visiting the town from east London and fell in the Mere when he went to feed the ducks.

He was rescued by a woman from Hoxne who leapt in after him.

Noah’s mother Katherine, from Leyton, said they had come to Norfolk to visit friends who had moved to Palgrave.

She said: “Some of the children had headed off to the park and a couple of them were down by the water feeding the ducks. Noah suddenly slipped off the bank into the water.

“His father was a few feet away but this lovely lady was fractionally closer and immediately leapt in and pulled him out. The water came up to his chest but because it is so muddy it’s unclear how deep it is and the lady said she was worried he couldn’t swim.

“I asked if she had far to go to get dried and she told me she lives in Hoxne, then she ran off home because she was shivering. I dried and cleaned Noah while his dad ran to buy an emergency change of clothes. We’d love to thank her but didn’t get her name. Contact kathpenton@hotmail.com or 07967 006305
