Auction visitors will go ape for fund-raising sculpture

Diss, Norfolk. TW Gaze auctioneer Mike Sarson with the BREAK for the GoGo Gorillas charity

Visitors to TW Gaze’s Diss auction rooms currently find themselves face-to-face with the startling sight of a white gorilla.

The unusual wildlife is one of a batch of 50 fibreglass sculptures which are part of the Go Go Gorillas! charity fundraising scheme which will take over the Forum in Norwich in October this year.

The white gorilla shows the sculpture in its ‘naked’ form before being painted.

Similar to the Go Elephants parade in 2008, the gorillas project will raise funds for Norfolk-based Break which helps vulnerable young people and families by providing homes, short breaks and holidays. Break is working in partnership with leading arts and education company Wild in Art.

The majority of the gorillas have now attracted sponsorship from local businesses and individuals, and they are being painted in a variety of styles designed by schools, community groups and professional artists.

Once completed, they will be part of a trail around the streets and parks of Norwich for visitors to follow. The gorillas will then be auctioned off by TW Gaze’s auctioneers to the highest bidders at The Forum, raising further funds.

In addition to offering their auctioneering services, TW Gaze is also sponsoring its own gorilla, which is currently away being painted by Wroxham artist Alex Egan in a design which features rural images of the Norfolk countryside.

Auction manager Matt Brand said: “We are the only sponsor from outside Norwich and are very keen to be part of such a big event and to have our gorilla back here once it is painted so it can be seen by local people.”
