Hover power for polar trip
A trip to the North Pole last year did not satisfy the appetite of adventurer Alex Henney, so he has decided to go back – by hovercraft.
Mr Henney, who lives in Ashfield, walked to the pole last year as part of Team Polar Horizon, which finished second in the 350-mile race.
He now plans to complete the first-ever trip to the remote region in a hovercraft next April, with friend Simon Marshall.
"We wanted to go back to the North Pole and came up with the concept of doing something that hasn't been done before," said Mr Henney.
"It will be a world first and it looked like an incredible way to travel to the region."
The pair are also using the trip to raise 50,000 for the Burnham-on-Sea Search and Rescue charity.
They hope to get satellite maps for the journey, which is expected to last seven to ten days, to avoid any dangerous situations.
"We were up in the North Pole at the same time as the BBC Top Gear team did their polar special and there was a lot of ice rubble," said Mr Henney.
"There is no way we are going to fly a hovercraft over anything like that."
Once the hovercraft trip is completed, the pair may delve into even more ambitious projects.
"Being up at the North Pole just makes you feel alive," added Mr Henney.
