Flower shop stays in the pink

A Diss shop which hit the headlines for its garish exterior has been given a new lick of paint this week.

Amity's Florist in Mere Street is being painted pale pink and cream, after receiving instructions from South Norfolk Council to tone down the bright shop front.

The shop was painted fluorescent pink in May, after owners Christine and Dennis Lathrope received a letter from Diss Town Council about cleaning up shop fronts.

But the colour was against conservation area regulations and had to be changed.

"We had a lot of abuse when we painted the shop," said Mrs Lathrope. "But people are shouting now we are painting over it."

The bright colour was used to raise money for Cancer Research UK by putting out two buckets and asking people to make a donation if they wanted to keep the pink or see it go.

Mrs Lathrope said 85 per cent who voted said they were in favour of keeping the shop pink and the collection made 700.

But Tony Palmer, South Norfolk councillor for Diss, said the shocking pink would never have been allowed in the historical town centre.

"We hope everybody will be happy a sensible compromise has been reached," he said.
