Final farewell to Woolworths

The lights were turned out on empty shelves in the Woolworths store in Diss, when it closed for ever on Tuesday.

Closing down sales pulled in the crowds from as far as Great Yarmouth, as people flocked to get a bargain and to shop for the last time in the iconic store.

Stock was reduced by 90 per cent from 3pm onwards in a bid to clear goods, with CDs selling for as little as 50p.

John Foulger, from Rickinghall, said: "It is a disappointment. It just shows how bad things have got with the economy – especially at this time of year – it's terrible."

Nikki Gunn, from Attleborough, said: "It was a shop you could get anything you wanted. We noticed that the quality has gone down but it is a shame to see it go and it will be missed."

But for some, the visit to the store was purely a trip down memory lane.

One woman said she had gone into labour in the shop.

"I was walking around for the memories today," she said. "I was in here 40 years ago, and the staff asked me if I was all right – and I said I think my waters have broken! I don't think I could forget that."

Staff at the store spoke about their devastation at the loss of the shop, which some had served in for more than 40 years.

Bridget Rudge, who had worked there for 37 years, said: "We are all absolutely devastated. We love working together. We may be smiling but we are crying on the inside. There are a lot of memories and I will miss it very much."
