Traders offer the personal touch

Are the residents of Harleston supporting the local traders and shopping locally?

Or are the bigger chains just too appealing, taking them out of town to do their shopping?

Julie Savill, 45, from Homersfield, sometimes does her shopping in Harleston and said: “Today I’ve just bought children’s shoes but I like the variety here, the personal touches and wide ranges.

“It’s a long trek to Norwich, and costly, if they haven’t got what you want.”

Ruth Brown, 50, has lived in Harleston all her life and said: “I just like to support the local people.

“I’ve seen so many places come and go here over the years and I know it’s very difficult to succeed in business but it is just nice that people can keep going.”

Mrs Brown says it is all about the personal touches: “I’ll go in the local butchers here and they’ll say ‘morning, how’s the family?’ and that’s nice and I think that’s important.”

Another resident, Charlotte Fletcher, 23, says she uses the local shops more and more since the birth of her baby: “It’s convenient and close by.

“The only thing is they are expensive but if you go in your car and go further on, you’re just going to pay in petrol anyway.”
