Weight gain and a poor diet were a double dose of bad news for Type 2 diabetes sufferer Ana Mitchell.
Doctors also discovered a sight complication and increased her medication to control her blood sugar levels.
At 11st 7.5lbs and 5ft 1in tall, Ana feared losing weight would be a struggle. But at Slimming World groups at Milton Keynes and, since she moved to Harleston in 2015 at King George’s Hall, she is now down to 9st 8lbs and can get back into clothes she had given up wearing.
“My medication has been reduced to one medication a day for diabetes and my thyroid medication has been reduced too,” said Ana, a Fressingfield resident.
She added: “I’m more active than ever, doing lots of walking as I now have more energy. I’m so proud because I’ve not given up and taken control of my health problems.”
Mrs Mitchell said the Slimming World groups she had joined kept her motivated, especially between meetings when she needed extra support. “I still get to enjoy my favourite meals such as a full English breakfast, roast dinners and lots of veg with extra lean meats too, just cooked in a healthy way.”
Hannah Balaam, consultant at the Slimming World group Ana attends, said: “I’m so proud of her and all she has achieved, To be able to share with everyone how she has taken control of her life and turned things around for the better is amazing.”
With obesity forecast to affect one in three adults by 2034, the focus on public health had never been more important, said Hannah.
“We know that making healthy lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your health right away.
“It also helps to raise self-esteem and self-confidence by helping people to feel more in control of their own lives, Plus, these behaviours can be passed on to the whole family, meaning the next generation grows up with healthy habits too.”
To join the Harleston Slimming World group, go to King George’s Hall on a Monday at 10am or call Hannah on (01379) 871016.
