Popular north Suffolk pilot killed by propeller at Tibenham airstrip
TRIBUTES have been paid to a respected pilot who died following a tragic accident at a south Norfolk airstrip.
Alistair Mathie, 67, of The Brook, Burgate, suffered a fatal injury while on the runway at Priory Farm, Tibenham, after making contact with an aircraft propeller.
Details supplied by the Coroner’s Office, said Mr Mathie had just completed a dual flight in an aircraft, landing at the private airstrip off Pristow Green Lane. Upon completion of the flight, he left the aircraft and made contact with the aircraft propeller, causing an immediate fatal head injury.
The incident happened just after 3pm on Saturday. His death is not believed to be suspicious.
The inquest, which was opened and adjourned yesterday by the Norfolk Coroner William Armstrong, heard the cause of death was a “severe head injury,” following a post mortem examination carried out by Professor Richard Ball.
Mr Armstrong adjourned the inquest pending further enquiries and investigations, including an investigation by the Air Accident Investigation Branch.
Tributes have been paid to the Light Aircraft Association coach, who is also said to be a former RAF serviceman, through flying community internet forums.
One poster said: “Al was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He was always willing to help anyone and never asked for anything in return. I can still picture him with his characteristic smile and good humour.”
Other posters commented: “Will miss him, his generosity, his humour, his knowledge and his zest for flying.” And, “Al always had time to pass on lessons from his vast flying experience, was the voice of common sense, and a damn nice bloke. A true gentleman- the world is a poorer place without him.”
