Commuters' cars upset residents

Residents of a Diss housing estate are suffering from problems caused by dozens of commuters who are using their streets as a car park.

More than 30 cars are parking at Ashbrook Meadow to avoid paying at the nearby Diss train station car park according to residents.

Frustrated resident Helen Bicknell contacted the police about the problem but was told they cannot enforce any legislation to prevent non-residents parking as the estate is private and unadopted by Norfolk County Council.

She said: "It is getting ridiculous now. There seems to be more and more cars every day and delivery vans can't get up the road because the cars are parked both sides. No one seems to want to sort it out."

She said residents only parking signs are being ignored and a neighbour has resorted to putting out cones and a sign but drivers have parked round the corner instead.

John Birchall, planning and transportation officer at Norfolk County Council, said: "The roads on the estate are unadopted which means that they are not part of the public highway. Unless the developer (Persimmon Homes Anglia) intends for these roads to be adopted then the parking problems are an issue that it needs to work with local residents on."

Persimmon Homes Anglia managing director Andy Fuller said he was aware of the issue and signs had been installed.

He added: "We are seeking to further resolve the matter and are in the process of working with the local highways authority to adopt the roads surrounding the site."

It is not the first time the issue of adoption has been raised on the estate. On June 12, the Diss Express reported how angry parents were calling for a play area in Ensign Way to be opened after it has been surrounded by security fencing for a year.

South Norfolk Council has declined to adopt the play area after an inspection revealed a drainage problem. Councillor David Bills said the council will approach Persimmon to move things forward.
