Funeral of Brian Ager

St Mary’s Church in Diss was full on Tuesday for the funeral of former Diss Express reporter and charity volunteer Brian Ager, originally from Burgate and lately of Roydon.

The service was conducted by Rev Maggie Swayze and those in attendance included his wife, Maureen, son Michael and his wife Janet Norman-Phillips.

There were representatives present from the many organisations Mr Ager had an involvement with and supported, including the Diss branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, Diss and District Probus Club, the Financial Times and the Journalists’ Charity.

Rev Swayze spoke of Mr Ager’s life, including his early days as a 16-year-old ‘cub reporter’ on the Diss Express in the early 1950s, to his years with the Eastern Daily Press, until he eventually found work as a sub-editor at the Financial Times, helping to steer the title through a period of rapid change.

His work with the Journalists’ Charity was also summarised.

After a the funeral, a gathering was held at the Saracen’s Head pub in Diss.

Brian Ager born May 13, 1935, died on June 6 this year, aged 79.
