Centre stays closed to save cash

The Tourist Information Centre in Diss will remain closed on Tuesdays so that South Norfolk Council can make savings, it has been revealed.

But Diss Town Council has agreed to act to fill the gap, offering their Market Hill offices as an information point where maps and other tourist information will be available from 9.30am until 3pm on Tuesdays.

There are also plans for a poster to be placed at the TIC when it is closed to make tourists and visitors aware of the change.

Town mayor Jane Trippett-Jones said: "Unfortunately the centre is going to remain closed due to budget constraints in the current economic climate. I'm disappointed but I understand."

Ms Trippett-Jones added that the town council will be in consultation with South Norfolk Council to look at other options for the future.

South Norfolk Council deputy leader Martin Wilby said: "Like everyone in these difficult times, we have to make savings.

"While I understand the views that have been expressed about the extra day closure of the TIC, this was not an easy decision to take. Nevertheless is one which we feel has to stand.

"We remain committed to providing the best quality service we can through the TIC and continue to work with the town council to ensure the best possible future for the town."
