Cancer support group

An Eye resident who suffers from the side effects of cancer treatment is among the first members of a support group for people with similar symptoms.

Peter Hawkins suffers from Peripheral Neuropathy, a condition caused by cancer-beating drugs such as chemotherapy treatments.

Symptoms include pain, numbness, and constant tingling sensations, mainly in the fingers and toes.

The support group has had its first meeting at Ipswich Hospital and future meetings will be attended by healthcare professionals including physiotherapists and occupational therapists to give advice.

“The big plus is that I am alive and talking,” said Mr Hawkins. “There is no cure and if you have the condition then talking to other people is encouraging and a help in itself.”

The monthly meetings are at the Woolverstone Wing, Ipswich Hospital. The next is in August.
