Conservative MPs from Norfolk and Lincolnshire are among dozens to have signed a letter published tonight urging the prime minster to stay on regardless of the EU referendum result.
Polling stations closed around an hour ago and results at local declaration centres are not expected until well into the early hours of the morning.
But 84 Conservative MPs who campaigned for the Leave side have signed a letter calling on David Cameron to stay on in Downing Street, whether the vote is in or out.
The signatories include North West Norfolk’s Sir Henry Bellingham, South Norfolk’s Richard Bacon and John Hayes, who represents South Holland and the Deepings.
The letter says: “We, who are supporters of Vote Leave and Members of the Conservative Parliamentary Party, thank you for giving the British people a choice of their destiny on 23rd June, 2016.
“We believe whatever the British people decide, you have both a mandate and a duty to continue leading the nation implementing our 2015 manifesto.”
