Villagers caught misbehaving at an upcoming Finningham fayre could find themselves put in the pillory - as a throwback to the Middle Ages.

Lorna Doyle and Steven Trumm bought The White Horse in July last year and have started introducing a series of monthly events, from April’s car boot and May’s vintage vehicle rally to the summer solstice being celebrated on June 21 and FinnFest music festival on July 18.

The event planned for August 31, pie powder fayre, has seen the couple go all out - by installing a pillory in their car park.

“It’s a piece of timber nine feet long and seven inches square set in concrete in the ground,” explained Steven.

“These things are still going to be here in 30 years’ time,” he added.

“If somebody misbehaves or hasn’t done their chores, we’ll have a little court judgement,” said Lorna.

Inspired by the historic Court of Piepowders, which was given jurisdiction over people’s actions and disputes at fairs and markets, the day will also feature tug of war, arts and crafts and refreshments.

Finningham held a pie powder fayre in 2013, but this will be the village’s first since 1871 to include a ‘court’.

“What we’re trying to do is really go with the historical context of it and build on that,” said Steven, who is also considering installing a whipping post.

“We have to try and create a place that’s different and, we’re in a village now, we live here, this is our home - we don’t get out much (if you run a pub you can’t) - so we’re trying to make it stand out,” he added.

The White Horse regularly hosts live music, quizzes, quoits and, on June 27, will be showing films produced by West Suffolk College students.
