A parish council is hoping to gain approval for a £174,000 free-to-use outdoor sports facility.
Long Stratton could be in line for a multi-use games area at the Manor Road playing field, if plans are approved by South Norfolk Council.

The floodlit area will have a seven-a-side and two five-a-side football pitches, a basketball court, two tennis courts and an option for netball

The general public will have access during daylight hours, until 9pm, while clubs will be able to use it until 10pm.

Parish council chairman, Andrew Lansdell, said: "Everyone is positive about it and we are anxious to press on. If it is approved, work would start quickly."

Mr Lansdell said the facility could be opened by the spring.

Long Stratton Football Club look set to benefit, with both senior and junior teams planned to have access when bad weather renders their grass training pitches unplayable.

Club chairman, Chris Austin, said: "It is going to be a great bonus to the village and club.

"It is a much needed improvement in facilities and it is needed in a place like this."

The council hopes that the tennis courts will bring a new tennis club to the town.

The project has been financed through a Section 106 agreement, where as part of planning permission for the Wilcon Homes estate at Church Fields, the parish council received a sum of money.

A date for the application hearing is yet to be fixed.
