It is supposed to be the North Easterners who are welcoming and friendly, and Suffolk people who are a bit reserved.
But Sue Hopper, 43, from Newcastle, and her partner Tony Xiberras, who are running the refurbished White Horse at Thelnetham, have found that their locals could not have been friendlier since they moved from Geordieland.

Although village pubs are struggling, the White Horse is beginning a new era, and a total refit – including new carpeting, restaurant and updated menu – was celebrated at an official reopening on Friday.

Mr Xiberras, 44, is half Maltese and half Welsh –“We’re a real United Nations couple,” she said.

Sue takes care of the front of house and Tony does the cooking.

Since the couple arrived, the pub, owned by Churchill Catering, of Rickinghall, has been “nicely busy” said Sue.

“It’s been great since we got here – customers really want to keep their village pub and have been very supportive.”
