A barmaid is wishing for love this Christmas, as the proud prize of Dating Miss Daisy competition.
Her colleagues at The Cross Keys, Redgrave, are offering the winner of the competition a date with Jessica “Daisy” Wheeler at the pub’s New Year’s Eve party.

A list of eligible young men is being compiled by pub landlord Sean Rourke, who will also make sure the rules of the game are followed – with rule number one being: “Sean’s word is final.”

He said: “It started out as a joke. Jess was moaning about not having a boyfriend, so we drew up a list of everyone who is eligible. It rolled on in conversation and we thought it would be fun to turn it into a competition.”

A list of interested suitors has been compiled and to gain points to win, they must woo Miss Wheeler between December 1 and Christmas Eve, when the winner will be announced.

Categories budding Romeos can win points for include drinks bought, gifts bought, compliments given and kind acts.

Mr Rourke will be on hand to judge whether comments count as a compliment or not and to provide guidance.

“If someone brings in flowers pulled out of the front garden, he won’t get a point,” he said.

Other rules include “Jess promises to be honest and upfront about all points, positive or negative” and “any applicants to ‘Date’ Jess must be single and genuinely interested”.

Friends can buy a “ballot” card for £1 and cast votes for who they want to win, which will be counted up together with the points earned at the end of the competition.

All of the money raised will go to the British Heart Foundation, because “these are matters of the heart,” said landlady Louise Creswell.

“She is a really good sport. It will be fun – a new year, a new man,” she added.
