Norfolk Constabulary and South Norfolk Council are both behind the proposals, which would allow police to confiscate alcohol if they believe it is about to be consumed.

Police Superintendent Paul Sanford said: “This initiative will allow officers to take robust action against the few who drink irresponsibly and make the town even safer for the majority who behave appropriately.”

The zero tolerance alcohol control zone will cover places including Diss High School, Morrisons and Tesco, the Mere and Park, the bus station and St Mary’s Church.

Mayor Simon Olander said: “This step forward will help the community and visitors enjoy our town any time of day or night as it always used to be.”

Residents have been sent letters outlining the plans.

The consultation period will take in residents views, as well as those of businesses and councillors and the final proposals will be submitted before South Norfolk’s cabinet for their approval.
